Paucity of democracy dividends to Nigerians in the past three years, compounded by grinding economic hardship, has make it an uphill task for the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship aspirants in Imo State in the 2019 elections and explains why new entrants such as Sir Stanley Chiedoziem Amuchie with unblemished political records draws closer attention from constituents across the state.
While many of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and APC aspirants have resumes in the public domain, their track record in different offices have provoked a fatigue for such resumes as they were not often backed with outstanding delivery in their appointed or elected positions, hence constituents are now more zealous to scrutinize new resume of someone like Amuchie, a top class accountant, administrator and technocrat, a first class graduate of industrial chemistry (University of Benin), who holds a master’s degree in corporate governance (Leeds Beckett University, UK). The Mbaise-born technocrat, who is aspiring to govern Imo on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Accountants of Nigeria, FCA, and an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, HCIB. Amuchie, who has attended various local and foreign leadership courses in institutions like Insead Business School (France) and Havard Business School, USA, started his career at Arthur Andersen, Lagos (now KPMG Professional Services) in September 1995 where he rose to the level of a senior before leaving in February 2000 for the banking industry. He joined the Financial Control and Strategic Planning of one of the top-most ranking bank in 2000 and is currently the Group Chief Financial Officer of the bank. In addition to his current responsibilities, he is a director of the Bank’s Nominees Limited, a global Custody Subsidiary. At various times, he was in charge of the co-ordination of the group’s foreign, and real estate operations; chairman of the Bank’s Securities Limited; Director Trustees; and Director Bureau De Change Limited of the same Bank. In recognition of his support and work in God’s vineyard, the founder/president of the Goodlight Foundation was, in 2007, admitted into the order of the Knighthood of St. Christopher, KSC, among other awards. Compared to the resume of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law, Mr Chris Nwosu, whose main credentials do not go beyond working under his father-in-law after reading urban and regional planning at Imo State University, Amuchie earned his position and social standing among leaders through diligent competition among peers, whereas Nwosu is seen in some quarters as the elongation of the tenure of Okorocha, whose administration has been adjudged a failure by the vast majority of the people of Imo. The final judgment ultimately rests on the ballot and not the choice of Okorocha as boasted on different occasions. The people of Imo are patiently waiting to make that decision in 2019 to prove to the governor that the choice of who governs the state belongs to voters and not an out-going governor who has failed by squandering the goodwill of the people.
