South Sudan: More than one million on brink of starvation
It has been three months since famine, which has been caused by a longstanding conflict between the government and rebels groups, was declared in some parts of South Sudan.
But areas outside the famine zones are also suffering from severe food shortages.
More than a million people in the country are on the brink of starvation. Some of them are trying to flee to neighboring Sudan for relief.
Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reports from Aweil, South Sudan.

Moji Olaiya: Daughter defies Muslim rites, wants corpse flown to Nigeria
The burial arrangement for late Nollywood actress, Moji Olaiya is causing an unexpected rift within the family.
Gist Monitor reported that the actress died yesterday in Canada.
The late actress converted from Christianity to Islam as an adult and certain members of her family are suggesting that she be buried immediately according to Muslim rites.
However, Olaiya’s 20-year-old daughter, Adun has refused to give in to that, insisting that her mother’s corpse be brought back for burial in Nigeria.
Although some family members are still trying to calm her down, the grieving young lady kept repeating that she wants to see her mother.
Adun said her mother “Must be brought back.
“I don’t care what anybody says, I just want my mother’s body.”
Now it seems burying her according to Muslim rites would be difficult.
It is understood that burial in developed countries is expensive.
For instance in Canada where she died, funeral costs can rise as high as $15,000.
However, bringing her corpse back to Nigeria could cost around half that amount.
Why French First Lady Brigitte Macron Wore Powder Blue, Just Like Melania Trump

At the inauguration of French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, his wife, Brigitte Macron, wore a powder blue, wool Louis Vuitton military-style jacket and above-the-knee dress. It was a fashionable look that boldly showed off the 64-year-old first lady’s bare legs. It also immediately drew comparisons to the powder-blue cashmere Ralph Lauren dress and coat American first lady Melania Trump wore to her husband’s inauguration in January.
Was this on purpose? Is it some kind of sartorial diplomacy in action, after her husband defeated right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen, whose populist message often matched Trump’s?
“If I’d have been in any advising role, I’d probably not have recommended her to wear this color,” executive image consultant Sylvie di Giusto tells Yahoo Style. “As the first lady, you want to be known for your skills, your experience, for the added value you’ll bring to the table and to the country you serve. You want to avoid distraction for any price.”
On the other hand, fashion and beauty editor Mary Alice Stephenson, founder of Glam4Good, thinks this choice was a strategic move.
“Anyone that’s savvy enough to help her husband become the leader of France is savvy enough to know what her choice is on inauguration day,” Stephenson tells Yahoo of the inevitable comparisons to Trump’s outfit. “[Macron] and her team — of course they know, and that was smart too. Because what happens is it has people talking about the first lady of France.”
That both women chose this shade of blue shouldn’t be surprising. “It’s associated with intelligence, trust and security, and the lighter the blue shade becomes, the more sympathetic, personal, warm and communicative it is perceived,” di Giusto said of the color, which is popular in both business and politics.
Though Jacqueline Kennedy wore beige to her husband’s inauguration, she wore sky blue gowns to public events at home and on a much-photographed trip to India in 1962.
Michelle Obama wore a cowl-neck Carolina Herrera dress of a similar shade in 2015, to meet Pope Francis on his first trip to the United States. And just last October, Kate Middleton wore a very Jackie O suit by Catherine Walker on her first solo royal visit, to meet the Netherlands’ King William-Alexander in the Hague.
Stephenson said there aren’t quite as many options available for a first lady on Inauguration Day as you might think. “You wear red and it’s too bright and ‘look at me’; it steals all the attention away from the man beside you,” she says. “You wear white, it’s a little too holier-than-thou and wedding day. Black — too dark, too down, too sad. Navy blue, same kind of thing. Yellow, not so good on blondes.”
Pastel blues are fashionable this year. Pantone called a similar shade, Niagara, “the most prevalent color for spring 2017” in terms of fashion, and said the denim-like color “speaks to our desire for ease and relaxation.” Gwyneth Paltrow wore a ruffled light blue Gucci suit in January that made the color look very now.
Color comparisons aside, Macron made a broader statement with her choice on Sunday. Stephenson points out that though the military jacket has many buttons, she wore it open, so “it was modern and easy and less buttoned up” than Trump’s retro look.
“I applaud her for showing off her body,” Stephenson adds. “Some women, as they age, they cover everything up, and there was a real openness [in her style]. This is empowering for women in their 60s to see a first lady looking fashion forward, sexy, and powerful by the side of a younger man.”
If France’s first lady continues to style herself this way, Stephenson thinks she will be popular with other women. “The reason why women connect so much with Michelle Obama, and why I think they’ll connect with Brigitte, is because you can identify with them,” she says. “Brigitte is not perfect. You see that she’s aged. She has wrinkles too. When someone is too buttoned up and too manicured and perfect, she’s not real. Women do not identify with that.”
Jidena condemns organizers of One Africa Music Festival, says ‘Africa must be on time’
Nigerian- American singer, Jidenna Theodore Mobisson has apologised to his fans for not performing at the One Africa music festival, but castigated the organizers for not keeping to time.
Jidenna in a video shared online expressed disappointment that he was not able to perform during the show, adding that it was not by his choice but due to mismanagement of time.
According to him, no one is to be blamed but Africans need to learn how to be on time.
He disclosed this in a video shared on his instagram page@Jidenna

Man charged with stealing wheelbarrows
Baita pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing brought against him.
ecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 7, at Achapa Street, Olodi Apapa, Lagos.
He said that the accused and others now at large stole the five wheelbarrows worth N135,000 from one Mohammed Abubakar.
Kokoye said that the complainant, who rents out his wheelbarrows for construction work, displayed them in front of his shop when the accused and his accomplices carried out the act.
The prosecutor said that Baita went to the complainant pretending he was there to rent some of his wheelbarrows while his accomplices stylishly rolled them away.
Kokoye said by the time Abubakar discovered what they were doing, they had already bolted with five of them.
He said that the complainant, however, apprehended Baita as he tried to escape.
The prosecutor said that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.
He noted that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case until May 23 for mention.

Nigerian singer D’banj has a thing or two to say about domestic violence.
The ‘Emergency’ singer took to Twitter on, May 11, 2017, calling men who beat women beasts.

Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe in a recent interview has opened up on the trials she faced in her marital home.
The popular Yoruba star in an interview with Broadway TV opened up on the details of the scandal that have trailed her and her husband, Lanre Gentry, for the past few weeks.

On the beating and why she stayed,
“He beats me consistently I stayed because I loved him and because every time he beats me, he begs and gets family and friends to beg me. He promised regularly to change but he never did.
When my husband gets angry, he gets physical, not only to me but to anyone. He has done that with my house help who reported him to the Police years ago.
I stayed because of my children and because a lot of people look up to me. I was a role model of some sort and I really wanted to keep it together. I just wanted a home.“
When asked why she wants to leave now,
“It’s not like I wanted to walk away but I just feel like we need help. I spoke to my husband’s brother about it. I told him I was going to pack out for some time while my husband seeks therapy. I just wanted to feel safe, that is why I moved my things out.
This last beating was brutal. I actually thought I was going to die. I’m still coughing and sneezing blood even after three weeks.“
On the day of the incident Mercy says she had informed her husband that she was attending a burial of her colleague. After his hesitance, she explained that it would not be fair on the lady since she had promised to be there and even invited him to come along.

She said, “Immediately, I opened the door, he kept beating me. I was begging him and asking why he was beating me. He said he would destroy my face such that no makeup would fix it and destroy my career.
He was acting like someone who was possessed. I told him “Lanre, mo ma bi mo fun e” (translated as “I have a child for you).“

How popular Calabar comedian, ‘Last Prophet’ escaped death

Friday Awade, popularly known as Otwetwe Master and Last Prophet, survived a ghastly car crash on Wednesday.
The comedian, who just had a baby boy, is so popular in Calabar that he was ‘Ali Baba’ of comedians in the Cross River State capital.
Otwetwe was returning from work in company of some aides when a speeding car reportedly rammed into them.
Sources say Awade swerved to break out of the danger zone but this made his car somersault three times before landing on its head.
The driver who rammed into Awade’s car reportedly zoomed off.
Fortunately, no life was lost. The comedian and those involved in the crash were rushed to hospital.
The crash happened around Calabar/Calabar Roundabout around 8pm.
Sometime last year, Awade had an altercation with singer-dancer Iyanya. A purported phone conversation of Iyanya threatening to deal with the comedian also leaked online.
No connection has, however, been established between this crash and Iyanya’s alleged threats.
Awade is an on-air-personality with HitFM.
HitFM’s head of programmes, Macdonald Peter-Anyangbe confirmed the incident assuring that Awade was safe.

The Grammy winner makes quite an appearance in DNCE‘s music video for “Kissing Strangers” and we are here for it.
Now, of course, the rapper herself is featured in the upbeat track, but it’s safe to say that fans got an eyeful during the highly anticipated video.
Minaj and DNCE released the track in mid-April, to rave reviews, and have been teasing the video throughout the day on social media.
Joe Jonas even took to Instagram to write, “Things are about to get real spicy…” And boy was he right!
In the clip he teased before the full video was released, Minaj is seen grabbing him by the shirt collar before, well, we won’t spoil the whole thing for you.
Minaj is about to have a very busy week on her hands as she’s expected to perform at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on May 21.
